An online petition urging Holt High School to keep its Indian mascot has already gotten thousands of signatures, eclipsing a petition on the same website urging Wentzville School District administrators to change it.
The new petition, “Keep the Indian,” which was started just hours after the original petition, has more than 2,900 signers as of this posting, while the original petition asking for its removal has just over 500.
The new petition was signed by many Holt High alumni, who commented that generations of their family had graduated as Indians and that they didn’t want to see that change. Others said that they found nothing offensive about the name “Indian.”
“We are honoring the Indian spirit and endurance,” said one signer.
