O’Fallon Police Chief Announces K-9 Retirement

OFallon Police K9 Ares

Chief Roy Joachimstaler posted the following message on the O’Fallon Police Department’s Facebook page today:

Sometimes it’s no fun being the Chief . . . I have put off typing this message all day –

It is with great sadness that I announce that effective December 1st 2016, Police Officer Tom Thompson’s canine partner, Ares, was medically retired from our Department. Officer Thompson met with our Department Vet who has been treating Ares and learned that recent tests confirmed that Ares is suffering from inoperable terminal cancer. Ares, without complaint, continued to work through his affliction before we were aware of how serious it was and just recently located an armed felony suspect in some woods without incident.

OFallon Police K9 Ares

He has always been a loyal, dedicated member of our Department who made his share of felony arrests and entertained an enormous amount of children and adults with the countless demonstrations he and Officer Thompson performed. So Ares can now rest at home with the Thompson family. He is retiring as every good Cop wants to do – he’s walking out of here on his feet, with a felony arrest in the books. “Good Job, Ares!”
