On the agenda for discussion at the workshop preceding the O’Fallon city council meeting on Thursday, February 12 is section 340.180 of the municipal code.
That’s the section of city code that contains the strict new “distracted driving” ordinance just passed by the city council in October of 2014.
The new section lists prohibited behaviors that can cause a driver’s vision or attention to be directed away from the business of operating the vehicle. These behaviors include but are not limited to:
- Using a mirror for grooming
- Reading anything other than vehicle gauges and equipment
- Inputting information for a GPS device
- “Turning one’s head substantially away from the path of travel to observe things in the vehicle or outside the vehicle but contrary to the path of travel”
The new ordinance was passed 8 to 1. The dissenting vote came from Ward 3’s John Haman.
According to city documents, Haman requested the discussion for Thursday’s workshop.
