Come on out to O’Fallon’s family-friendly Public Works Fair on Wednesday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will be held in the T.R. Hughes Ballpark west parking lot (at the corner of Tom Ginnever Avenue), 900 T.R. Hughes Boulevard, O’Fallon, Missouri 63366. Admission and all activities are free and designed to put residents in touch with services provided by the City. Whenever residents drink a glass of water, drive on City streets, set trash at the curb for collection or relax in a City park, their lives are touched by the City’s Public Works Department.
The fair will provide safety awareness games and activities for kids, educational materials for adults, free rides on the O’Fallon City Train for everyone, and a free hotdog with chips and water for the asking.
Kids love this hands-on event because they can ask questions of City staff and climb into the driver’s seat on big equipment used to maintain City services, streets and parks. They also enjoy the working model of the waste water treatment plant, finding out how a water tower works, and operating (with staff’s help) the automatic arm that picks up trash containers for emptying into an Environmental Services Department side-loader or trash truck.
New this year, the Parks Department will demonstrate how to identify ash trees and discuss the threat posed by the emerald ash borer. And kids can make and take “grass heads,” drawing a face on a cup, adding soil and grass seeds and then taking it home to watch the “hair” grow.
Big equipment to be exhibited by the Streets Department includes a paint striper truck, a street sweeper, a mini-excavator, trucks with snow equipment, a set-up truck (used for concrete pours) and a backhoe.
O’Fallon’s Water and Sewer Department will have sanitary sewer maintenance equipment and a sump pump display showing the proper setup for keeping the pump from discharging into the sanitary sewer. Also, a sign-up sheet will be available for people who would like to tour the City’s water treatment plant.
The Police Department’s display will include the City’s D.A.R.E. vehicle, a police car and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) booth with equipment and information on preparing for an emergency.
