Do you need money to make repairs or improvements to your septic system?
The Missouri On-site Wastewater Improvement Grant – Loan program provides financing for homeowners seeking to make improvements to, or replace their on-site wastewater treatment systems.
The program is funded by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and delivered by Missouri’s regional planning commissions and councils of government in an effort to improve Missouri’s water quality.
Homeowners are eligible if they have a failing or failed on-site wastewater treatment system as documented by a certified installer or local health agency.
Low-income households receive half the funding as a grant. The other half is financed as a loan, with terms based on ability to pay.
Households not determined to be low-income can still receive a 10 percent grant and a 60 percent loan, with the remaining 30 percent to be self-funded by the homeowner.
Some of the conditions for the grant-loan program include:
- Funds are to be used for repair or replacement by approved contractors
- The value of the system funded cannot exceed the value of the property on which the system is placed.
- Homeowners must have a sufficient income to make the loan payments and maintain the system.
- Homeowners must have a minimum of three bids for the work.
The grant-loan program cannot be used for new construction, to connect homes to a cluster or public sewer system, or to cover costs previously incurred.
