Did you know that at the end of last school year 189 Fort Zumwalt students were homeless and 93 were in foster care? #FZCommunity was in action this August, ensuring all students have what they need to be ready to learn each day.
Thank you to Central County Fire, O’Fallon Firefighters Community Outreach, The O’Fallon Optimists, the St. Peters Police Department and the River City Rascals for organizing supply drives and providing hundreds of stocked backpacks, notebooks, folders and more to get this year off on the right foot.
Thanks, too, to First Assembly Church in St. Peters. Church officials invited Paul Becker, director of Student Nutrition Services, to come out and meet the congregation, which presented him with a check for $3,000.
“I must have shaken hundreds of hands that morning,” Becker says. “Parents, employees, people whose kids graduated from Fort Zumwalt.” Becker says the donation was made to help students in need cover meal balances. “Not all students in need make the cut-off to receive federal assistance,” he says.
The donation gave more than 150 students and their families a clean slate for the new year.
